Colour Assignment

Last week we were given an assignment where we got given an envelope and inside it was a piece of paper with a word on and a colour swatch (we all got different ones). My word was 'Manmade' and my colour swatch was different shades and tones of purple. For the task we had to take eight pictures overall, five of the pictures had to relate to chosen words (you could take a picture of anything you wanted). Then with the last three pictures you had to have one which included your word (mine being manmade) and all three pictures had to include the colour purple, which was the colour I got on my swatch. Then today we had to show are pictures to the groups we were in and talked about them and had feedback on them, it was more of a whole group discussion than formal presentation which I think worked really well rather than having to stand up in front of everyone and talk about them. The way we all discussed it as a group instead of getting up and talking about it on our own made me and I think the whole group feel a lot more comfortable talking in front of everyone, this way I feel we gave feedback a lot more than we would have standing up in front of everyone for this particular task. The images on this blog are better quality if you click onto them.

For this picture the word I chose to use was 'Texture' I think this is a good word to use because as you can see in this image there is so many different kinds of textures within the stones, the cracks on the wall and the whole composition as a whole has lot's of different textures that stand out within it. For this picture I used an aperture of f9.2 and shutter speed of 1/249.

An artist i've researched before that I used to relate to texture is Aaron Siskind, nearly all of his pictures are in black and white and I think that if mine was changed to black and white it would have more of a connection with his work.

The next word I thought I would pick was 'Reflection' it was quite easy for people to guess the word in this one but even though it's obvious I still like the picture and effect the water has on the reflection of the house in it. I like how it blurs the image slightly but you can still tell what it is in the refection and you don't lose any of the bright colours within the picture. In this picture I used an aperture of f9.2 and shutter speed of 1/249.

In this next picture I picked the word 'Movement', I think this is my favourite picture out of all this selection, first because of how much the bright yellow stands out and catches your eye but also because of how the whisk has been captured moving and you can see from the picture how fast it had been spinning round. Another thing I like about this picture is the composition and how all you can see is the custard thats bright yellow that really stands out but then there's the end of the whisk coming in from the corner giving this really nice effect from it spinning. For this picture I used an aperture of f9.2 and shutter speed of 1/2.

In this image the word I decided to use was 'Shape'. In this picture the colours aren't that bright and don't stand out a lot but I think the sharp angles and lines make up for it, I like some of the subtle shadows within the picture and think these add and help towards those bold lines. The way the object fills the whole frame also adds to the composition and image. I used an aperture of f6.9 and shutter speed of 1/15 in this picture.

'Shiny' was the word I used for this next image and again like the image where I used the word reflection I think this one was quite obvious as to what the word would be. But in this picture I think that maybe you could use the word reflection aswell in it because the wall is reflecting onto the pan. I quite like in this image how your eyes follow the curves of the pan and follow it round. The aperture I used was f6.9 and the shutter speed was 1/15.

These next three images are the ones that I had to use the same colours off my colour swatch and also in one use the word I got given. In these pictures I tried  to get a few different shades of purple and think I did get at least three or four different shades and tones within the pictures.

In my first picture that I had to use the colour purple within it I picked the word 'Microscopic' to go with it. I picked this word because of the closeness towards the object and how you could see all the little details on the jumper in the picture. I think it looks good having the whole of the image fill the frame and the shadows also fit in well in the composition. I also like how bright the purple is within the image. In this image I used an aperture of f6.9 and shutter speed of 1/2.

For this picture I used the word I got given which was 'Manmade' also having the colour purple within the image. In this picture there is more than one purple tone/shade which I think works well with how the image was took having the darker shades at the front in focus then with the lighter shades at the back which are out of focus. I think the composition of this image and how it's set up works really well, I feel like it looks like the glasses were placed in a certain position in a certain place on a certain background when really I just found them exactly how they are and didn't move them from where they were placed. For this image I used an aperture of f4.9 and shutter speed of 1/40.

On my final image I used the word 'Multiple' and again had the colour purple in the image as it was my colour. In this picture I like the way you can tell it's the word multiple by the three chocolate's but how it's only focused onto the one in the middle and by doing that your eyes really focus onto that middle chocolate and your able to see the texture and brightness of the wrapper around it. It also helps the chocolate stand out by having such a pain and simple background in the picture. In this image I used an aperture of f4.9 and shutter speed of 1/40.

For all these images I think that I have done my best to relate to the words I chose and the word I got given and also the colour I got given.
