Colour Assignment 2- The interpretation of colour within a landscape

Last week we got given this assignment which is meant to further develop our understanding and appreciation of colour and consider its impact upon a audience. We got spilt into three groups and each group got given a season, either spring, autumn or winter. The season I got given was autumn. At first I thought this would be really easy seen as we're in autumn now, but looking around the trees still seem very green and don't all have the red falling off leaves like they usually do, so I thought that i'm going to have to think of something a little less obvious. Before going out and taking my pictures I decided it would be a good idea to look at some other photographers work to get some inspiration, here's a few I looked at:

Martin Parr

I looked at Martin Parr for inspiration because he takes pictures that aren't the usual ones you see and they nearly always have a lot of colour associated with them.

Susen Derges

In Susan Derges's images she uses lots of different ways of taking her images and comes out with very interesting compositions.

Andre Kertesz

I really like these two images and think there really interesting to look at. Even though there is no colour to either of them and there in black and white I don't think that it matters and think that they work better than if they were in colour.

Ansel Adams

Again I think that even though this image is in black and white it is still so striking and really captures how the scene was.

Henry Gilpin

Last I looked at Henry Gilpin, I love these two images and think they are two really good landscape pictures. In the first I love how you can see all the texture in the tree bark and how theres all those beautiful trees but the main focus still stands on one and how the image of the tree takes up the whole frame. Next is the one of the waterfall again I really like this picture and how you can see the water flowing over the rocks. Even though these are in black and white again I still think that they work really well as landscape images.

Once looking at these photographers I decided to go out and start taking some pictures. I started off by taking the obvious photos by looking at how leaves and trees change at autumn time. Click on the images to make them bigger to see better quality.

Next I decided to look at a less obvious thing thats connected to autumn so I decided to go and look at Blackpool Illuminations. I chose this because they only have them on in autumn time and although its not as obvious as trees and leaves its still something that people connect to autumn. This is a selection of some of the pictures I took.

Out of all the pictures that I took to show the season autumn my favourites are these five.

The top three I feel are obvious autumn pictures, whereas the last two of Blackpool lights aren't. I took pictures of Blackpool illuminations because they only have those up on autumn, but then thought people might not understand and get that so instead of choosing one of those for my final image i'm going to choose a more obvious one.

Final Image

I am choosing this picture as my final image because I feel that its the best one that portrays the season autumn. It has striking colours that catch your eye and I really like the composition. In this image the leaves on the tree show them going from green to a golden brown/ orange colour, this shows the changes that happen in autumn. Also you can see the sun in the image which is quite bright this shows that it is still autumn and not the darker weather like winter, same with the lake where you can tell it hasn't yet changed to winter because it hasn't frozen over yet. I feel like this is the best image that I took to show and portray the interpretation of colour within a landscape for autumn, so this is why it is my final image.
